FAQs

Here are some questions that people tend to have in mind when looking for singing lessons. If there are any questions that I’ve missed, please feel free to contact me!

Do I need to have any previous singing experience, and do I need to be able to read sheet music?

Not at all! I love teaching beginners, and can teach you how to read music gradually. I have many pupils who come to me and start by working with printed lyrics before progressing onto sheet music.

Do you teach group singing lessons?

Not usually. I prefer to teach my students individually, as it allows me to give my full focus to tuning into what they specifically need to progress. Every person’s voice is different; they can vary depending on age, hormones, genetics and vocal habits, and for the sake of my students’ vocal health I want to make sure I can hear them as clearly as possible. Having said this, if you have anything specific in mind please do get in contact and I’ll be happy to see if I can make it work.

What is your cancellation policy?

Although I’m always happy to reschedule a lesson within 7 days of the original date, and strive to be as accommodating as possible, any lessons that are cancelled/missed with less than 24 hours notice will still be charged (48 hours at peak times of evenings and weekends). This is standard practice amongst music teachers in order to protect our incomes.

How do you structure your lessons?

In terms of structure, I’ll start with some warm ups and technical exercises before moving on to working on songs. I can tailor the lesson to whichever aspect of singing you’d like to focus on, whether that’s technique, confidence or acting through song and will move at a pace comfortable for you!

What ages do you teach?

I teach teens, adults and children from the age of 6. I find this is the age where children start to find music lessons really beneficial, and I believe it’s never too late to start learning!

Can you help me prepare for my drama school audition?

Absolutely! I had a lot of experience auditioning for drama school, and can help with song choice, audition technique, monologue preparation, acting through song and can guide you through what to expect on the audition day. I love working with people applying for drama school as it’s such an exciting time and it’s a joy to support them towards their future careers.

Do you teach grades?

I don’t currently coach pupils for exams. Personally, I prefer to collaborate with my pupils and work on material that they feel excited and creative about, without the time pressure that doing exams can bring. However, it is something that I am considering doing in the future, so if you have your heart set on doing them, please do enquire and I’ll see what I can do!

What music do you work with?

I’m happy to work with you to find songs, but ultimately I want to work on material that you feel passionate about as I feel it’s so important to enjoy singing lessons. Everyone has a different taste, so I love the process of choosing material to be a collaboration.

Do I get access to sheet music and backing tracks?

I provide students with backing tracks and sheet music for any material that we’re going to be working on in the lesson through Google Drive. I can also provide recorded warm ups and exercises for you to use whenever you wish to help you in your own practice.

I want to give it a go, but I’m nervous!

Please don’t worry, most people are when they first come for a lesson! As someone who’s struggled with confidence myself, I appreciate that it can feel exposing. However, I always aim to make you feel as confident and relaxed as possible; I will tailor the lesson to whatever you would personally like to work on and we will move at a pace that’s comfortable for you.

How often should I have lessons?

It completely depends on what you’d like to achieve and your schedule! Weekly lessons are best for progress, however if you’re struggling to find the time then lessons every two weeks are a great middle ground, and can give you more opportunity to practice in-between (but do make sure that you do the practice - remember, you only get out of lessons what you put in!).

How do I pay?

I’m very flexible, so I’m happy to either receive payment via bank transfer on the day of the lesson, or I can invoice you regularly for packages of lessons (e.g. every month or every half term/term for parents).
